Position Summary Managing Director

The Managing Director of Automated Technologies is responsible for managing business finances, operations, and business development for the entire Automated Technologies business unit. This position will work with the CEO, senior leadership team, and employees to continually refine and implement corporate and operational strategies. While managing the business unit’s overall activities, the Managing Director will create an environment of accountability, collaboration, and innovation with office staff, field staff, and customers. Overall, the Managing Director of Automated Technologies is responsible for establishing and maintaining a world-class customer experience while following Ellingson’s Company Values.

Essential Job Functions

Leadership / Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the CEO to develop and accomplish goals and strategic plans established by the Company’s Senior Leadership and Extended Leadership teams.
  • Spearhead the development, communication, and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes.
  • Collaborate with the management team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and personnel designed to accommodate the rapid growth objectives of our organization.
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance management team; Mentor direct reports to cultivate skills and increase consciousness of the interrelationship between each department in the AT group.
  • Remain knowledgeable of market and industry trends, competitors, and all aspects of Automated Technologies’ market.
  • Establish key performance indicators for managing the AT group.
  • Responsible for capital planning and expenditures.
  • Establish compensation, training, short and long-term goals for the AT group.
  • Gather and analyze customer trends to assist in developing corporate strategy.

Technical Responsibilities

  • This position manages all Automated Technologies staff.
  • Develop departmental goals and imperatives.
  • Assist in the development of individual goals.
  • Assist in the development of strategic plans.
  • Perform employee performance evaluations.
  • Interpret blueprints
  • Create a bill of materials/take offs
  • Determine project cost
  • Negotiate with suppliers
  • Create project proposals
  • Collaborate with other project managers or department leadership while planning capacity
  • Maintain capacity plan
  • Create project schedules
  • Order materials / create purchase requests
  • Schedule manpower
  • Schedule subcontractors
  • Schedule rental equipment
  • Schedule other resources required for project completion
  • File excavation locates consistent with MN Department of Public Safety regulation or similar requirements in other jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate with the contractor(s) and owner
  • Effectively manage punch lists
  • Manage projects to an expedient completion
  • Provide equipment orientation and training to the owner
  • Create and distribute Operation and Maintenance documentation to contractor/owner
  • Collaborate with Business Development, Accounting, Warehouse, Fabrication, and Operations staff
  • Develop and enforce standards of work and workmanship
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment
  • Create item records and purchase requests
  • Stay current on codes, municipal regulations methods, technology, tools, and equipment offerings
  • Represent the company in community, academic or professional events
  • Adhere to and enforce company policy and procedures
  • Schedule electrical permits and inspections.
  • Execute and/or schedule Automated Technologies preventative maintenance and/or service as required.

  • Proven working experience on building automation and/or Automated Logic projects.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships at a level within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to develop and execute plans to deliver results.
  • Ability to develop, monitor, and improve departmental metrics.

  • Financial skills include cost modeling, cost analysis, make vs. buy analysis.
  • Blueprint reading
  • Estimating experience
  • Understanding of applicable building codes and trade standards
  • Understanding of commercial construction
  • Proficient computer skills, specifically: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Adobe
  • Experience with SAP or other ERP systems
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships
